Certificate and Diploma courses conducted by the Department of English Language Teaching and Distance and Continuing Education Unit of the University of Ruhuna are approved by the Senate and Council of the University




Introduction

The Extension Courses in English conducted by the Department of English Language Teaching and the Distance and Continuing Education Unit consist of the following:

  • Certificate in English
  • Advanced Certificate in English
  • Diploma in English
  • Higher Diploma in English

The Extension Courses in English (ECE) are introduced with the intention of catering to the English language requirements of the students and the professionals in order to assist them in their communicative needs both in their studies and work. This program also creates a pathway to achieve a higher educational qualification in their life and students will be able to meet the challenges in academic and professional settings thereby making them more productive and competent in different domains where English is used. In order to enhance the quality of the education offered through these courses, the Extension Courses have been designed to meet the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) standards.

The main objectives of this study programs are

  • To provide an opportunity to the students to develop English Language skills much needed for efficient performance in both higher education and work.
  • To create a pathway for the students to obtain a higher educational qualification in English desired by potential decision makers in higher education institutes as well as to cater to the requirements of the job market.

Course Administration:

Courses are conducted under the rules and regulations of the University of Ruhuna.

Registration Procedure:

Executed by the Distance and Continuing Education Unit (DCEU) of the University of Ruhuna.

Conduction of Classes:

Classes are conducted at the Department of English Language Teaching on Saturdays and Sundays.

This is a basic proficiency course in English that caters to day- to -day communicative needs of students

SLQF Level: 01

Course Duration: One year (160 hours)

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

  1. Required marks from the Selection Test
  2. Minimum qualification to apply for the Selection Test is Pass in G.C .E. (O/L) examination

The objectives of the program are:

  • To enable students to engage in simple conversations in day-to-day communicative contexts.
  • To improve fluency in reading and comprehension of short texts with basic sentence structures.
  • To develop reading strategies such as scanning, skimming and guessing skills.
  • To make students competence in writing short descriptions, notices, memos, forms etc.
  • To make students competence in listening to short texts, poems, stories and day to day conversations and interpreting them
  • To enable the students to use basic grammar structures accurately.

Target Group:

The course will be for those who are:

  • Wishing to enhance their language competencies
  • Seeking employment
  • Already in employment in both the public and cooperate sector
  • Ready to venture out into self-employment

Course Structure:

The course will cover the components of reading, listening, speaking and writing

Course Content:

  • Reading advertisements / notices
  • Reading and understanding a simple process / manuals
  • Reading passages of a basic level of difficulty consisting of about 200 words
  • Identification and use of basic punctuation marks: full stop, comma, quotation marks etc.
  • Writing about people, places, objects etc.
  • Writing short messages, notices, instructions
  • Writing e-mails.
  • Listening and understanding simple conversations & dialogues.
  • Listening and understanding instructions, directions.
  • Listening and understanding English Songs etc.
  • Introducing oneself and others
  • Making short speeches
  • Giving directions
  • Taking part in conversations

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this program students will be able to:

  • Recognize cohesive devices in written language.
  • Process writing at an efficient rate of speed.
  • Recognize word classes, lexical patterns and rules.
  • Infer context that is not explicit by using background knowledge.
  • Write short descriptions of different genre.
  • Distinguish communication strategies used by speakers in day today conversation.
  • Respond to language functions.

Teaching methodology:

Teaching, module- based discussions and feedback sessions

Method of Assessment:

Assignments (written) - 10%
Mid-Course Examination - 20%
Final Examination (written) - 50%
Oral Test - 15%
80% of Attendance - 05%
Total - 100%

Candidates who are successful at all of the above will be awarded Certificate in English from the University of Ruhuna.


Course fee : Rs. 35000.00

This is a proficiency course in English of intermediate level that caters to the communicative needs of students.

SLQF Level: 02

Course Duration: One year (160 hours)

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

  1. Successful completion of SLQF Level 1 (Certificate in English)
    OR
  2. Required marks from the Selection Test

Minimum qualification to apply for the Selection Test are

  1. Pass in G.C .E. Ordinary level examination
  2. Completion of NVQF Level 3

The objectives of the program are:

  • To enable students to engage in conversations in communicative contexts with the focus on language functions.
  • To enable students to read and comprehend texts with complex sentence structures.
  • To enable students to use reading strategies such as scanning, skimming and guessing skills.
  • To enable students to be able to produce different writing texts and documents adapting appropriate styles.
  • To enable students to listen and interpret different short texts and conversations.
  • To enable students to use intermediate grammar structures necessary for both spoken and written communication in English.

Target Group:

The course will be for those who are:

  • Wishing to enhance their language competencies
  • Seeking employment
  • Already in employment in both the public and cooperate sector
  • Ready to venture out into self-employment
  • Engage in higher studies

Course Structure:

The course will cover the components of reading, listening, speaking and writing

Course Content:

  • Text of 200-500 words taken from books, magazines, newspapers, brochures, fliers etc.
  • Filling applications
  • Writing formal letters, CVS, short texts etc.
  • Listen to local/ international news
  • Listen to formal speeches / short lecturers
  • Listen to songs
  • Taking part in formal discussions
  • Presentation skills
  • Taking part in debates
  • Discussing and reporting.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this program students will be able to:

  • Engage in conversations in communicative contexts with the focus on language functions.
  • Read and comprehend texts with complex sentence structures.
  • Use reading strategies such as scanning, skimming and guessing skills.
  • Produce different texts and documents adapting an appropriate style.
  • Recognize sentence boundaries and cohesive devices.
  • Recognize intonation and stress patterns.

Teaching methodology:

Teaching, module- based discussions and feedback sessions.

Method of Assessment:

Mid-Course Examination - 20%
Final Examination (written) - 50%
Oral Test - 15%

Candidates who are successful at all of the above will be awarded Advanced Certificate in English from the University of Ruhuna.

This is a proficiency course in English of intermediate level that caters to the communicative needs of students.

SLQF Level: 03

Course Duration: One year (450 hours)

No. of Credits:30

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

  1. Successful completion of SLQF Level 2 (Advanced Certificate in English)
    OR
  2. Required marks from the Selection Test

Minimum qualification to apply for the Selection Test are

  1. Sitting for GCE Advanced Level Examination.
  2. Completion of NVQF Level 4.

The objectives of the program are:

  • To enable the students to engage meaningfully in discussions, arguments, debates on topics of academic and professional interest.
  • To enable students to read texts critically and evaluate language styles, genres and different points of view.
  • To distinguish different text types.
  • To familiarize students with language used in literary works.
  • To enable students to listen critically and interpret information.
  • To enable students to write different documents adopting appropriate mechanics of writing.
  • To enable students to use complex sentence patterns and build structurally complex and meaningful texts.

Target Group:

The course will be for those who are:

  • Wishing to enhance their language competencies
  • Seeking employment
  • Already in employment in both the public and cooperate sector
  • Ready to venture out into self-employment
  • Engage in higher studies

This is a proficiency course in English of intermediate level that caters to the communicative needs of students.

SLQF Level: 04

Course Duration: One year (450 hours)

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

  1. Successful completion of SLQF Level 3 (Diploma in English)
    OR
  2. English Trained Teachers’ Certificate
    OR
  3. National Diploma in Teaching (English) obtained from Colleges of Education.
    OR
  4. Diploma in English for Employment (University of Ruhuna)

The objectives of the program are:

  • To enable the students to engage meaningfully in discussions, arguments, debates on topics of academic and professional interest.
  • To make students understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including academic and professional discussions.
  • To enable students to read texts critically and evaluate language styles, genres and different points of view.
  • To enable students to identify figures of speech.
  • To understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.
  • To enable students to write different documents adopting appropriate mechanics of writing.
  • To enable students to differentiate between written and spoken discourse.
  • To enable students to produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Target Group:

The course will be for those who are:

  • Wishing to enhance their language competencies
  • Seeking employment
  • Already in employment in both the public and cooperate sector
  • Ready to venture out into self-employment
  • Engage in higher studies

  • Read texts critically and evaluate language styles, genres and different points of view
  • Identify figures of speech.
  • Identify with ease virtually everything heard or read.
  • Differentiate between written and spoken discourse.
  • Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
  • Identify a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning.
  • Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  • Recognize rhetorical forms of written discourse and their significance for written discourse.
  • Summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
